As a recycled fiber, bamboo fiber allows for manual control over its length and fineness, making it more versatile. In contrast, cotton fibers are naturally formed, with fixed length and fineness. Cotton has a dull appearance, whereas bamboo fiber exhibits a subtle luster, giving fabrics made from it a softer, smoother, and slightly velvety feel. **Bamboo Fiber Performance**
We all know that cotton has a soft texture and is highly absorbent—absorbing more than twice its weight in water. If we place equal weights of cotton and bamboo fiber in clear water, the bamboo fiber sinks quickly, while cotton floats on the surface. This is because bamboo belongs to the grass family, not a woody plant. Under a microscope, bamboo's structure appears as a network of vascular channels, resembling honeycomb-like pores. These hollow structures allow it to rapidly absorb and evaporate moisture, similar to a sponge. In comparison, cotton fibers have a solid, cylindrical cross-section, like a chopstick, which makes them less absorbent than the hollow bamboo fiber.
The hollow structure of bamboo remains intact even after processing into recycled fibers. This pore structure contributes to the cooling and breathable properties of bamboo fiber clothing, making it excellent at absorbing sweat and keeping you comfortable.
One common concern when it comes to clothing is oil stains. Oil can easily penetrate fabric and become difficult to remove. While cotton is particularly sensitive to oil, bamboo fiber behaves differently. When we tested a bamboo fiber towel by pouring cooking oil and soy sauce on it for five minutes, then washing it in water, there were no visible traces of the oil. This is due to the fine internal structure of bamboo fiber. Although it has small pores, these are too tight for dense oil molecules to enter. The oil remains on the surface, making it easy to wash away. Therefore, bamboo fiber is resistant to oil stains.
When it comes to dyeing, bamboo fiber performs exceptionally well. Its multi-honeycomb structure allows dye molecules to penetrate quickly during the washing process. Once inside, the dyes are securely held within the fiber, resulting in vibrant, long-lasting colors. This makes bamboo fiber clothing not only colorful but also less prone to fading.
Another unique property of bamboo is its natural antibacterial quality. Bamboo contains a substance called "bamboo kun," which acts as a natural defense against pests and bacteria. This antibacterial property is retained during the processing of bamboo fiber, helping to prevent odor and insect infestation. Unlike regular fibers or cotton, bamboo fiber clothing stays fresher and more hygienic over time.
