December 3 marks the 18th International Day of Persons with Disabilities, a global occasion to raise awareness and support for people with disabilities. On December 2, in Datian County, Wuyi County Youth League, and Beibei Yi Wuyi Children's Clothing collaborated to launch the "Caring for Children with Disabilities, Bringing Warmth" campaign. The initiative delivered six brand-new winter outfits to six primary school children who have disabilities or come from families where parents are disabled, as well as three children from impoverished backgrounds. The goal was to provide comfort and encouragement, reminding these kids that they are not alone and that their efforts can lead to a brighter future.
"I'm really happy today! My aunt bought me new clothes!" said Xu Kaiyao, a 15-year-old girl who only reached the fifth grade this year. She has a physical disability, with deformed legs that make it difficult for her to walk. Her family has spent a significant amount on medical treatment. To help her continue her education, she lives with her brother, Xu Kaiyang, an 11-year-old classmate. Xu Kaiyao was especially excited when she received the new jacket.
Xu Li, a teacher at Gucun Primary School in Wuyi County, told reporters that children with disabilities or those from poor families often feel isolated and struggle with self-esteem. They need more support and understanding from the community. One such child is Zhong Yiming, an 8-year-old boy who is usually well-behaved and performs well academically. However, he comes from a broken home—his parents divorced, and his mother suffers from mental illness. With no stable income, he was previously cared for by his grandfather, who passed away last year. His mother’s frequent mental health episodes often force him to skip school, leading him to sleep on the streets rather than return home. Now, the school covers all his educational expenses and arranges for him to stay at school on weekends.
Lei Jianli, the manager of Beibei Yi Wuyi store, shared that supporting disadvantaged groups is part of their responsibility. She hopes more people will show compassion and care for those in need, especially children with disabilities. Through such activities, the community can create a more inclusive and supportive environment for everyone.
